some things to worry about in the aftermath of the election
i’ve been trying to figure this out myself, what specifically i should be worried about. i know a lot of people are terrified. categorising our fear is helpful for knowing what precautions and steps to take in the next few months, as well as after trump is sworn into office.
- same sex marriage was a supreme court ruling, and overturning it would be a lengthy process. this doesn’t mean it absolutely will not happen once trump takes office, but it does mean it won’t be immediate. it is possible for the court to rule past rulings incorrect, and trump plans on appointing very conservative judges.
- both trump and pence support the religious freedom act, as well as workplace “freedom”. this gives businesses a legal pass to refuse to serve lgbt customers, and means they can refuse to hire or fire lgbt employees.
- pence believes in defunding HIV research to pay for conversion therapy. conversion therapy will continue as is, still happening on a state by state basis.
new jersey, vermont, california, oregon and illinois have banned conversion therapy.
- trump is repealing obamacare, which will have an effect on transition resources as well as HIV-related healthcare.
roe v wade could very well be overturned. i’d say this would be both more immediate and easier than overturning same sex marriage.
- hate crimes happened more often following brexit. if you’re white, please watch out for your friends who aren’t. keep an eye on your local organisations as well. the thing to immediately worry about is the reaction of trump supporters, given the validation of their beliefs.
this is just what i’ve thought of off the top of my head, please feel free to add to this list. there’s obviously.. a lot more to be said. another concern we should all have is still the DAPL, especially since trump has invested money in it. you can donate here, or send things on the supply list, or donate to the legal defense fund (they have an amazon wishlist too).
now is the time to get involved, if you’re able. find your local anti-fascist organisation. planned parenthoods and crisis centers tend to be understaffed and could always use volunteers. if you have an lgbt organisation in your area, check them out. see what BLM is doing near you.
edit: made a typo when i first posted this, so if you reblogged the earlier version and would like to reblogged the fixed one.. have at it
