honestly? hot take but the whole “make gay movies with happy endings!/no gay movies about the struggle of forbidden love!” thing doesn’t do it for me and i wish the rallying cry was for gay and lesbian movies made by gays and lesbians and/or starring gays and lesbians because that is 3000000x more likely to result in a movie that resonates and is beneficial and empowering. like “moonlight” isn’t a cakewalk emotionally but the reason it works is because the story was written and handled by the folks for whom it was important. idk that’s just my onion i actually like gay/lesbian movies that involve some kind of pain or struggle just fine because movies that are dramatic are interesting it’s how that’s handled and by whom that decides whether it feels exploitative or not. and i betcha that sometime maybe liiike 5 or 10 years down the line we’re gonna start seeing “happy” gay cinema made by straight people that will feel just as empty and soulless as the tragedy porn that’s been the norm so far.
