Why We Say Latinx: Trans & Gender Non-Conforming People Explain

The letter “x,” instead of say an “o” or an “a,” is not a typo. In fact, that final letter is very intentional. The “x” makes Latino, a masculine identifier, gender-neutral. It also moves beyond Latin@ – which has been used in the past to include both masculine and feminine identities – to encompass genders outside of that limiting man-woman binary.

Why is it ok for Spanish people to call Americans Gringos who can’t speak Spanish, but frowned upon to point out a Spanish person who can’t speak English?

Porque los Americanos, y la mayoría de hablantes de inglés, implantan su lengua como si fuera la mejor y la superior a todas las otras. Sin ni siquiera tener en cuenta las muchas otras lenguas que existen en el mundo, tan válidas y valiosas como la suya. Pero claro a un Americano/hablante de inglés nunca se le va a mirar por encima del hombro por ello; no se le va a decir que debe aprender más lenguas “porque la suya es la superior”. Pero en cuanto un hispanohablante hace lo mismo se le ve como inferior ya que “el español no es tan valioso como el inglés, y todo el mundo debería aprender inglés”. Fucking Gringos..

When Mabel Valdiviezo returned to Perú after living as an undocumented immigrant in California for sixteen years, it was art that brought her closer to her mother, Bila Flores. For the first time they will showcase their work in the exhibit Mothers and Daughters in Art: The Prodigal Daughter and the Healing Mother. The exhibit will be running until September 9th at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts.

Curated by Indira Urrutia, the exhibit brings to light the multi-generational immigrant stories of Mabel, her mother, and grandmother while raising awareness to Mabel’s documentary film-in-progress Prodigal Daughter. The film will show her reconciliation with her family after the sixteen years of separation.

biracial people are POC there is no two ways about that.

and y’all wonder why biracial people end up making their own little communities for other biracial people or they end up hating themselves because they’re told they aren’t poc enough.

Stop pretending that black/white biracial folks are the only ones out there. Stop ignoring the afro-latinxs, the ones who have both asian and white ancestry, the ones who are part middle eastern and white, the ones who are both middle eastern and asian. Any combo you can think of they fucking exist.

And stop acting like biracial kids have to be a perfect mixture of their parents. That isn’t how genetics fucking works. Some of us are a deep olive, others are just as black as their black parent, and others are nearly as white as a wedding dress which doesn’t make them white simply white passing.

Stop making biracial kids hate themselves, hate their skin, hate their hair, hate everything about themselves. Stop telling them which side of themselves they should take pride in. Stop telling them how to identify. Stop telling those who are partially white that they shouldn’t shittalk white people, when 99% of the time the white part of their family hates them. They have every right to shittalk white people.

It’s pretty sad if your Latino and can’t speak Spanish.
