Tim Wong, a microbiologist who works at the California Academy of Sciences, single-handedly repopulated an entire species of butterfly in his backyard.
Wong decided to build a greenhouse dedicated to creating a safe haven for California’s pipevine swallowtail butterfly population, which were hovering near the brink of extinction. Thanks to the ideal conditions that he created – the sunlight, cool breeze, favorable temperature fluctuations, and seeding the greenhouse full of California pipevine, the only flower that these insects eat – the previously endangered population is now thriving.
