Kii says:
This is a partial list and some people with these conditions may be able to bind depending on the severity of the condition. Everyone is different.
- Asthma (Me!) or Atypical (Walking) Pnemonia– Breathing issues.
- Scoliosis or other spine problem– Could cause pain
- Connective tissue disorders– Could cause ribs to dislocate
- Cardiac issues (Me!)– If something causes an increase in heart rate/breathing, binding may worsen the effects.
- Injury, restricted movement, or paralysis in hands, arms, or shoulders- May be unable to get binder on and off safely or practically
- Seizures- Depending on type of seizure, seizures may cause increase in breathing
- Dysautonomia- Blood pressure issue. My friend who has this says binding makes their dizzy spells worse.
- Neuropathic pain in abdomen– Person would not know if they were injured from binding
- Any disability that causes person to use crutches, forearm crutches, or a wheelchair– When getting used to these devices, a person’s shoulders or arms can be sore, and binding may increase this
- Intellectual disability– Person may not be able to remember amount of time spent in binder or recognize signs that they need to take it off
- Hypotonia in arms or hands– Would make binder hard to take off
- Hypotonia in diaphragm– Would make breathing in binder more difficult
- Osteoporosis, osteogenesis, or anything that harms bone density– Would make person more likely to injure ribs or back
- Anything involving an exceptionally high pain tolerance or inability to recognize pain(me!)– Person would not know if they were injured while binding
- Autism/SPD (me!)/sensory issues– Tightness may be too uncomfortable or fabric may be a bad texture
- Having a busy/physically active schedule– Binding during exercise is bad, and some people might not be able to take off their binder at work/school
There are definitely more but that’s all I can think of? Besides anxiety disorders, which could cause someone to panic if they wear a binder because it’s tight and restricts breathing. Also, no one needs a medical reason not to bind. Some people just don’t like it.
